After Grant
4 years
It is also worth noting that European patent applications (which currently cover 40 or more countries during pendency) need to be nationally processed (“validated”) after grant in the countries where the applicant requires protection.
This validation stage can cost up to £2000 per country, following which the applicant is left with a bundle of national patents. Since June 2023, however, it is additionally or alternatively possible to validate in many (currently 18) countries as a single “Unitary Patent” without the payment of additional patent office fees.
